The easternmost anchor of the Silk Road — where the routes converge into the imperial heartland. Chang'an sits at the center: once the largest city in the world, now a city haunted by the weight of a collapsed empire and the memory of what it meant to be the center of everything.

The Eastern Terminus is not a destination; it is where the road begins, or ends, depending on which direction you are facing. Merchants who survive the crossing of the Tarim Basin arrive here and find themselves in a world governed by paperwork, taxation, and the slow machinery of a bureaucracy that has outlasted the empire it was designed to serve.

Character

Faded imperial grandeur. The city still functions — perhaps more efficiently than during the height of empire — but the cultural confidence that once animated it has curdled into nostalgia. The Eastern Imperial Dominion maintains formal structures, but its reach beyond the Gansu Corridor is largely theoretical.

Key Tensions

  • Imperial Dominion seeking to reassert control over the Gansu trade routes
  • Merchant guilds that have learned to operate without imperial protection
  • The deep memory of what Chang'an once was — and who built it
